Great Catches and Game Fishing Spots in New Zealand

As a country so focused on the outdoors, New Zealand is a fisherman's dream. From fly fishing in some of the nation's rivers to big game fishing off chartered boats around the Auckland Harbour, there is something for every kind of fisherman the whole year round. Book a weekend in the North Island to enjoy some of the best fishing spots in the world.

Brown and Rainbow Trout are popular catches in the many rivers around the country, while Tuna, Marlin, Kingfish and prized New Zealand Snapper are great saltwater catches that can be found off the coast. What you catch all depends on where in the country you go and what time of year; a bit of extra planning will earn you better catches during your trip.

The North Island's rivers and lakes are popular destinations for fishermen on the hunt for Trout. There are far too many bodies of water to name them all, but Rotorua and Taupo are two of the most popular regions for game fishers.

There is a huge population of both Rainbow and Brown Trout in Lake Rotorua that draws visitors all year round. With catches up to 3kgs, you won't be disappointed with a good weekend spent on the lake.
Taupo has plenty of rivers and streams where you're bound to find a good catch. Check into a fishing lodge and book a guided tour of the area to find some of the region's best kept secrets or even charter a boat out onto the lake.

Along the West and North East Coasts near Auckland and Northland in the North Island, there are plenty of opportunities for big game fishing in NZ. Charter a boat from Auckland Harbour and head out to some of the hot spots in search of the ultimate snag.

In the Hauraki Golf, nearly 90km from Auckland, Great Barrier Island offers great Marlin and Tuna catches during the summer. The area is also good for Kingfish and you'll sometimes pick up one of the country's prized Snapper. Further north along the coast again, Blue and Striped Marlin are common during the warmer months.

There are so many reasons for a fishing weekend away in New Zealand's North Island. Book a chartered boat out of Auckland for the ultimate experience with mates, or look into a few nights at one of the fishing lodges in and around Lake Taupo and Rotorua. Having a guide who knows their way around can be a huge help for finding those more elusive catches.

Cast your line and have fun in New Zealand, home to some of the best fishing spots in the world.
Gladiator Marine is the ideal boat hire in Auckland for your next corporate event, big game fishing day trip in Auckland, or simply cruising on Auckland Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf.
